Two inspiring days driving the future of HPC: HPCKP26 Barcelona Highlights

The HPCKP Annual Meeting Barcelona presented a two days event program from 17 to 18 June 2026, focused on the latest developments in High-Performance computing (HPC), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Computing, bringing together technology leaders, engineers, software developers and researchers from the global HPC community. 

The evening before the event, the speakers were warmly welcomed with a special dinner at a beautiful Catalan restaurant. It was the perfect opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and build relationships before two inspiring days of discussions, innovation, and collaboration within the HPCKP community. A wonderful start to an event bringing together passionate minds and shaping the future of high-performance computing. 

Day 1 started with technical presentations covering key topics at the intersection of HPC and quantum technologies. Sessions explored hybrid quantum-classical supercomputing, quantum workflow integration, benchmarking approaches and the use of HPC infrastructures for quantum simulation and experimentation. Speakers discussed practical challenges such as monitoring hybrid HPC quantum environments, improving resource management, and evaluating the performance of quantum emulation frameworks on large scale computing systems.

The EuroHPC Federation Platform (EFP) was also presented, a secure “one-stop shop” designed to harmonize access to European supercomputing, AI, and quantum computing infrastructure. Driven by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, the EFP streamlines user onboarding and unifies fragmented cross-site workflows through centralized services like single sign-on (SSO), federated resource allocation, and interactive web tools.

Afterwards, solutions related to weather & climate applications and benchmarking GPU Cluster Health were highlighted, as well as OpenCHAMI, an open-source platform for deploying, managing and scaling HPC clusters, that uses modular, containerised services for efficient HPC deployment and scaling.

After the sessions, there was an amazing opportunity to visit the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and discover the incredible infrastructure behind some of the most advanced computing technologies. The highlights of the visit were MareNostrum5 and the new quantum computers opening new possibilities for the future of computation.

Day 2 continued with the new generation of Fujitsu servers based on the FUJITSU-MONAKA processor, a next-generation Arm-based processor planned for 2027, designed to address the challenges of future data centers, building on Fujitsu’s experience in supercomputing (K computer and Fugaku) and leveraging advanced semiconductor technology.

Later on, the event focused on the evolution of high-performance computing through innovation in storage, accessibility, and user-centered solutions. The sessions explored the role of scalable storage technologies in supporting modern HPC environments, as well as the transition toward more personalized and flexible computing experiences. Discussions also highlighted the importance of democratizing HPC access. This is particularly valued in research fields such as biomedicine, like the new HPC implementation at the European Institute of Oncology (IEO), where creating more intuitive and user-friendly platforms they increased HPC usage. Day 2 also showcased how solutions like Open OnDemand from OSC are helping users move more easily from initial access to production-ready HPC workflows.

The afternoon sessions were based on the future of HPC orchestration, scheduling and infrastructure management. Key topics included GPU workload optimization, Kubernetes integration, advanced resource orchestration, and new approaches to managing complex computing environments. The discussions emphasized the need for more efficient, adaptable, and automated HPC ecosystems, with insights into next-generation schedulers, resource allocation platforms, and frameworks supporting intelligent scientific workflows. The day concluded by reinforcing the importance of making HPC environments more accessible, scalable, and ready to support the future demands of research and innovation.

At the end of Day 2, HPCKP26 participants had the opportunity to discover one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks: the Sagrada Familia. This special visit provided the perfect way to conclude the event, combining technology, creativity, and cultural inspiration.
