Now deployed an HPC cluster in the cloud using AMD-based HPC-optimized instances on AWS, in order to benchmark the next generation of Amazon EC2 Hpc instances.<\/p><p data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"1342\">This study compares Amazon EC2 Hpc8a preview instances with Amazon EC2 Hpc7a instances across representative open-source HPC workloads. It is widely used across industrial sectors for use cases such as crashworthiness, safety, and manufacturability of complex designs.<\/p><p data-start=\"3058\" data-end=\"3342\"><strong data-start=\"3058\" data-end=\"3071\">OpenFOAM\u2122<\/strong> is a general-purpose Computational Fluid Dynamics solver capable of addressing demanding industrial and scientific applications. Its scalable solver technology makes it a relevant candidate for evaluating cloud-based HPC performance across different node configurations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-135560e elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"135560e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span benchmarking HPC performance on clusters with a large number of CPUs.<\/p><h3 class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-section-id=\"1h3uqbl\" data-start=\"3489\" data-end=\"3505\">OpenRadioss\u2122<\/h3><p data-start=\"3507\" data-end=\"3658\">For OpenRadioss\u2122, Do IT Now used the publicly available <strong data-start=\"3563\" data-end=\"3606\">Taurus 10 million finite elements model<\/strong>, recovered from the OpenRadioss\u2122 public repository.<\/p><p data-start=\"3660\" data-end=\"3730\">The model includes three simulation settings based on simulation time:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3732\" data-end=\"3947\"><li data-section-id=\"16pehie\" data-start=\"3732\" data-end=\"3768\">Full simulation: 120 milliseconds.<\/li><li data-section-id=\"8xny9h\" data-start=\"3769\" data-end=\"3860\">Shorter simulation: 10 milliseconds, best suited for performance and scalability testing.<\/li><li data-section-id=\"u7wa9l\" data-start=\"3861\" data-end=\"3947\">Very short simulation: 2 milliseconds, useful for testing HPC cluster functionality.<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"3949\" data-end=\"4024\">For this benchmark, Do IT Now used the 10-millisecond simulation test case.<\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"ev5jh1\" data-start=\"4026\" data-end=\"4039\">OpenFOAM\u2122<\/h3><p data-start=\"4041\" data-end=\"4177\">For OpenFOAM\u2122, Do IT Now used polyMesh models with different mesh resolutions to compare execution times under different configurations.<\/p><p data-start=\"4179\" data-end=\"4202\">The benchmark includes:<\/p><ul data-start=\"4204\" data-end=\"4290\"><li data-section-id=\"xdbtry\" data-start=\"4204\" data-end=\"4247\">A <strong data-start=\"4208\" data-end=\"4224\">Coarse model<\/strong> with 65 million cells.<\/li><li data-section-id=\"ytfqyv\" data-start=\"4248\" data-end=\"4290\">A <strong data-start=\"4252\" data-end=\"4266\">Fine model<\/strong> with 236 million cells.<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"2725\" data-end=\"2777\">\u00a0<\/p><p data-start=\"4292\" data-end=\"4487\">These test cases were used to analyze how OpenFOAM behaves across single-node and multi-node configurations, and to evaluate the impact of memory bandwidth and core density on solver performance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-661ea3e elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"661ea3e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" elementor-size-default\">Conclusions<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0419ede elementor-widget-mobile__width-initial elementor-widget-tablet__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0419ede\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"4505\" data-end=\"4592\">The benchmark campaign shows that optimal HPC configuration is highly solver-dependent.<\/p><p data-start=\"4594\" data-end=\"4987\">For <strong data-start=\"4598\" data-end=\"4614\">OpenRadioss\u2122<\/strong>, the Hpc8a instances deliver a clear performance advantage over Hpc7a across all tested configurations. The benchmark demonstrates strong scaling up to 384 cores, which appears to be the optimal configuration for this specific workload. Beyond that point, scalability becomes less efficient, mainly due to communication overhead and workload-specific decomposition limits.<\/p><p data-start=\"4989\" data-end=\"5239\">For <strong data-start=\"4993\" data-end=\"5006\">OpenFOAM\u2122<\/strong>, both Hpc7a and Hpc8a demonstrate consistent scalability as the cluster expands. However, Hpc8a shows a significant performance improvement compared to Hpc7a, with runtime reductions of roughly one third across the tested scenarios.<\/p><p data-start=\"5241\" data-end=\"5678\">The results also highlight an important architectural consideration: high core density does not automatically lead to the best performance for every workload. While OpenRadioss\u2122 benefits from the available core count, OpenFOAM\u2122 can experience memory bandwidth saturation when fully populating a node. In this case, distributing fewer cores across more nodes can improve performance by increasing the available aggregate memory bandwidth.<\/p><p data-start=\"5680\" data-end=\"5994\">Overall, Amazon EC2 Hpc8a instances show a strong performance uplift compared to Hpc7a and confirm their relevance for large-scale MPI workloads.
